Biography

James Crable's artworks have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and abroad, including the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; theAlbright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the Austin Museum of Art, Austin, TX; the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, England; and the Interform Atelier, Osaka, Japan. His work is in the collections of the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY; the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA; the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, NC; and the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. Corporate collections include IBM, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard Corporation, Equitable Life Insurance Company and the Hanes Corporation.

Mr. Crable has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. These include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship and the Southeastern College Art Association's Award of Distinction. Other honors include the Guild Award of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, Newport News, VA; the Jack Leigh Special Award for Photography, Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA; and the Jurors Choice Award, 20th National Exhibition, Maryland Federation of Art, Annapolis, MD.

Mr. Crable holds degrees from the State University College, Buffalo, NY (BS); Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY (MFA); and Chelsea School of Art, London, England (HDA). He has taught art courses at Brockport State College, Brockport, NY; Croydon College, Croydon, Surrey, England; and James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA. Upon retirement from James Madison in 2006, Mr. Crable was designated as University Professor Emeritus.
